Delta College came up just short in a pair of tightly contested games on Thursday afternoon, falling 5–4 and 3–1 to Owens Community College in a road doubleheader.
Game 1: Owens 5, Delta 4
In the opener, the Pioneers held a 4–1 lead heading into the sixth inning, but a late rally by the Express — fueled by wild pitches and clutch hitting — flipped the game in the final two frames.
Delta's offense was sparked by David Walsh, who went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and a run scored. Darrin Cummings and Dayne Reif also knocked in runs, while Joe Kowalak and Caiden Larkin each added a double and a run.
Starting pitcher Drew Schafer struck out five over six solid innings but unraveled in the sixth as Owens plated three runs to tie it. Marcus McGeshick took the mound in the seventh and was tagged with the loss after allowing the walk-off double to Tristan Schuerman.
Game 2: Owens 3, Delta 1
The nightcap was a pitcher's duel, with both teams managing just a handful of hits. Despite outhitting the Express 5–2, Delta was undone by defensive miscues and timely Owens baserunning.
All three of Owens' runs were unearned, coming in the second and third innings. Evan Hegarty and Jimmy LaForce scored on passed balls in the second, while a throwing error in the third brought home Schuerman.
Delta's lone run came in the third inning when Joe Kowalak drove in Caiden Larkin with a line-drive single to center. Kowalak finished 1-for-4 with the team's only RBI.
Pioneer starter Devin Schular went the distance, striking out nine while allowing just two hits and no earned runs. On the other side, Owens' Coltin Chany struck out 10 in six innings to earn the win, and Griffey Dye secured the save.
