Delta College had a hard-fought doubleheader split against Mid Michigan College on Thursday at Dow Diamond, highlighted by a dominant pitching performance in Game 1 and a late push in Game 2 that ultimately fell short.
Game 1: Delta 1, Mid Michigan 0
In a classic pitchers' duel, Delta's Devin Schular stole the spotlight, tossing a complete-game shutout to lift the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory. Schular was electric on the mound, scattering four hits across seven innings while striking out nine and walking three.
The lone run came in the sixth inning when Mason Mellott drove in David Walsh with an RBI single, breaking the scoreless deadlock. Walsh reached base twice with a hit and a walk, also scoring the game's only run. Delta managed just three hits in the game, but Schular's lights-out performance made it enough.
Mid Michigan threatened late but failed to capitalize, stranding several runners in the sixth and seventh innings.
Game 2: Mid Michigan 8, Delta 2
Mid Michigan flipped the script in the nightcap, using a five-run sixth inning to pull away and secure an 8-2 win.
Delta was held scoreless through six innings before finally breaking through in the seventh. Joseph Kowalak drove in two runs with a timely single, while David Walsh continued his strong day at the plate, collecting two hits and scoring a run.
Despite the late push, Delta's pitching staff struggled to contain Mid Michigan's bats. Starter Tyson Bauman allowed three earned runs over 4.1 innings, while relievers Perry Leblanc and Mason Beaver surrendered a combined five runs in the final two frames.
The Pioneers showed flashes of offensive life with four hits and five stolen bases, including two from Jack Berthiaume, but couldn't overcome Mid Michigan's mid-game surge.
Looking Ahead
Delta College (1-1) will return to action next week as they continue conference play. With Schular's dominance and the team's aggressive baserunning, the Pioneers have a solid foundation to build on as the season progresses.
