Delta College came up empty in a home doubleheader on Saturday, falling 5-0 and 3-0 to Mid Michigan College in a pair of tightly contested matchups where timely hits were hard to come by.
Game 1: Mid Michigan 5, Delta 0
Despite solid work on the mound from Nathan Whitney and the bullpen, the Pioneers couldn't crack the scoreboard in the series opener. Whitney threw four innings, allowing just three earned runs on five hits while striking out four. Relievers Preston Mata and Eli Wall combined to allow only one additional run over the final three innings.
Mid Michigan broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning, capitalizing on a pair of Delta defensive errors and timely contact. An insurance run in the sixth sealed the deal for the Lakers.
Offensively, Delta was limited to just two hits—one from Whitney himself and another by Joseph Kowalak. Although the Pioneers worked a pair of walks and stole a base courtesy of Tyler Smith, they were unable to advance a runner past second base.
Game 2: Mid Michigan 3, Delta 0
The second game followed a similar script—strong pitching, but quiet bats. Freshman Caleb Milbrandt and reliever John McNicol combined to no-hit Mid Michigan through seven innings. Despite the dominance, walks and hit batters proved costly.
Milbrandt allowed just one earned run over 3.2 innings but issued six walks and hit two batters, which helped Mid Michigan scratch across three runs—two unearned. McNicol was electric in relief, striking out seven over 3.1 perfect innings.
Unfortunately, the Pioneers couldn't convert stellar pitching into offensive production. They were held to just three hits, including a double by Kowalak, and stranded multiple runners in scoring position.
Weekend Recap
After opening the weekend with a 1-0 win on Friday, Delta drops to 8-22 on the season following three consecutive shutout losses. Still, with encouraging performances on the mound and glimpses of offensive potential, the Pioneers aim to regroup and rebound in the upcoming conference series.
