Men's Basketball falls short to Kirtland 70-75
GRAYLING, MI – The Delta College Men's Basketball Team battled to the final buzzer before falling 70-75 to Kirtland Community College in their conference opener, moving to 3-9 overall and 0-1 in MCCAA play.
The Pioneers remained competitive throughout, trailing by just one point at halftime, 39-40. Delta demonstrated resilience and efficiency from the charity stripe, converting an impressive 22-of-24 free throws (91.7%) on the night, including a perfect 12-for-12 performance in the first half. Sir Real Smith delivered a dominant offensive performance, pouring in a game-high 38 points while shooting 10-of-21 from the field and maintaining perfect accuracy from the free-throw line. Smith also contributed five rebounds and three assists, showcasing his all-around impact. The Pioneers shot 36.8% from the field (21-of-57) and knocked down six three-pointers while displaying tenacity on the boards with 24 total rebounds.
Delta's defensive effort included six blocks and consistent pressure that kept the contest competitive throughout.
Jaylen Carthan provided valuable contributions across the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals, exemplifying the team's balanced effort.
Despite the narrow margin, the Pioneers demonstrated the competitiveness and determination that will serve them well as conference play continues.
