Delta College Softball delivered a powerful performance on Tuesday, taking both games of a doubleheader against Owens Community College in front of a home crowd at the Pioneer Softball Complex. Fueled by a combination of timely hitting and strong pitching, the Pioneers won Game 1 by a score of 8-5 and followed it up with a 13-9 slugfest victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Delta 8, Owens 5
Despite committing six errors in the field, Delta made the most of its seven hits to outlast Owens in the opener. Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers erupted for three runs and added another trio in the sixth to seal the win.
Offensively, Kortney Kotenko led the charge with a 2-for-3 effort that included a double, a walk, and an RBI. Katie Chinavare, Jolie Buschlen, and Alicia Candelaria each drove in a run, while Megan Mankey provided a spark atop the order with two hits and two runs scored.
On the mound, Geena Gauthier battled through 5.1 innings, scattering seven hits and five runs (just two earned), while striking out five. Eliana Rodriguez entered in relief and shut the door with 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the save.
Game 2: Delta 13, Owens 9
The nightcap turned into a high-scoring affair, but Delta never trailed after posting four runs in the first inning and five more in the second. The Pioneers pounded out 13 hits and capitalized on defensive miscues from Owens to complete the sweep.
Izabel Lathrom stood out with a 3-for-4 performance that included two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Jolie Buschlen added three RBIs of her own on a double and a single, while Brooke Halyckyj crossed the plate three times with a 3-for-4 day.
Geena Gauthier returned to the circle to start Game 2, allowing just one earned run over four innings while striking out four. Eliana Rodriguez and Cadence Swartz combined to finish the final three frames and hold off a late push from the Express.
Despite committing eight errors in the second game, Delta's offensive production was more than enough to secure the win.
