Bio
Background:
Have coached for over 30 years; Including H.S, Club and College, 6 Years at SVSU and currently in 13th year at Delta. I graduated from SVSU with a degree in education. I have an Ed specialist in Educational leadership. I have been a teacher for 25 years. I am currently an elementary PE teacher. I have an advanced national diploma from USC. Coaching has been a passion for the majority of my life.
Coaching Philosophy:
I believe culture is everything and without a good culture you cannot have and sustain success. Building a good culture isn’t something you do at the beginning of the year and forget it. Culture is something you are constantly working on. When I recruit I want great soccer players but even better people. Motivation should be intrinsic however it can be helped by the intensity of the practice and the standard that everyone is trying to get better. If this is the case your team is going to continually get better and perform at a higher level. I truly care for all of our players. My goal is that after a player spends 2 years in our program they can look back and say that was the best two soccer years of my life.
Achievements:
I have been coaching at Delta for 13 years and the head coach for the last 6 years. I am currently in year 7. Delta soccer has been in 5 of the last 6 National Championship games. Winning in 2021. My coaching record as of fall of 2023 101-6 -4. We have had a large number of our players go on to play at D1, D2, D3 and NAIA schools. Any player that has wanted to play on has and they have had great success at their next school.
Insights:
My favorite part of coaching is building relationships with the players. I consider them family. I am proud to help guide them alongside their family to be great human beings and to be successful in whatever they do in the future.
The biggest challenge was covid. Never knowing if we were having a season.
Balancing my coaching life is extremely tough. Working a fulltime job and having a very busy family life. Coaching is very time consuming with preparing and coaching games and practices. Watching game film, athletic department demands, Recruiting, texts, zooms, and Tours. If you do it well it leads to no downtime.
Goals and Vision:
Goals for this season are the same every year. To become the best version of ourselves as we can be. To set and follow our standards to the best of our ability. My goal is to hopefully develop our soccer players into key players not only for our team but the next college team they attend. The legacy I want to leave is that I was a fair and kind coach that did everything he could for his players and developed a culture where everyone was welcome and felt they could progress.
Fun Facts:
I love to read, workout, spend time with family and watch tv. I have a lot of memorable games but the biggest one is the year we won the national championship in 2021.
