Delta College Softball Spring Break Overview
Delta College softball wrapped up a busy 10-game spring break stretch that featured several close contests, a pair of impressive shutout performances and multiple comeback wins against a challenging slate of opponents. The Pioneers opened the trip on March 1 and battled through games against Patrick & Henry Community College, Surry Community College, Glen Oaks Community College, Brunswick Community College, Danville Area Community College, Shawnee Community College, College of DuPage and Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute.

Game 1 – Patrick & Henry Community College 1, Delta College 0
Delta opened the trip with a tough 1-0 loss to Patrick & Henry Community College in a pitcher's duel.
The two teams were scoreless through six innings before Patrick & Henry pushed across the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Delta was limited offensively, managing three hits on the day, while Patrick & Henry combined for 15 strikeouts in the circle.
Despite the result, the Pioneers kept the game close throughout and gave themselves a chance late in a tightly contested opener.
Game 2 – Delta College 6, Surry Community College 4 (8 innings)
Delta bounced back in exciting fashion with a 6-4 extra-inning win over Surry Community College.
Surry built an early 3-0 lead before McKayla Methner got the Pioneers on the board with a solo home run in the third. Delta took its first lead in the fifth inning when Kortney Kotenko and Geena Gauthier each drove in runs, then added another in the sixth.
After Surry tied the game in the seventh, Delta answered in the eighth. Methner came through again with a two-run double to score Taylor Belanger and Grace Zwetzig, giving the Pioneers the lead for good.
Methner starred at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, double, and three RBIs. Zwetzig finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Gauthier added two hits and an RBI.
In the circle, Reese Dominowski started and worked five innings, while Gauthier picked up the win in relief with four strikeouts over the final three innings.
Game 3 – Glen Oaks Community College 5, Delta College 4
Delta dropped a close contest to Glen Oaks Community College, 5-4.
The Pioneers scored first in the second inning when Methner reached on an error that brought home Belanger. After Glen Oaks answered with five runs over the next two innings, Delta chipped away at the lead.
Zwetzig delivered a two-run single in the fourth to score Belanger and Methner, and Sami Kopasz added an RBI groundout in the sixth to make it a one-run game. Delta could not find the equalizer in the seventh.
Zwetzig went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Taylor Belanger and Izabel Lathrom each had two hits. Dominowski and Gauthier split time in the circle, with Gauthier tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
Game 4 – Delta College 4, Brunswick Community College 3
The Pioneers returned to the win column with a 4-3 victory over Brunswick Community College.
After four scoreless innings, Delta broke through in the fifth. Kennady Tiitola reached on an error that allowed Methner to score, and Lathrom followed with an RBI fielder's choice to make it 2-0.
Brunswick answered with two runs in the sixth, but Delta responded immediately. Kotenko delivered an RBI single to score Gauthier, and another run came home on an error to put the Pioneers ahead 4-2. Brunswick added one run in the seventh, but Delta held on for the win.
Gauthier tripled and scored, while Kotenko, Belanger, Methner, Zwetzig, and Lathrom each added hits.
Dominowski started and threw two scoreless innings, and Gauthier earned the win in relief after pitching the final five innings.
Game 5 – Danville Area Community College 5, Delta College 1
Delta fell 5-1 to Danville Area Community College despite matching the Jaguars with six hits.
Danville scored in the first inning and added two more in the third before Delta got on the board in the bottom half when Lauren Baranek scored on a steal of home.
Baranek finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Hannah Hycki added two hits. Gauthier worked six innings in the circle and allowed just three hits, but Danville capitalized on walks and key situational plays to come away with the win.
Game 6 – Delta College 8, Shawnee Community College 7 (8 innings)
Delta earned one of its biggest wins of the trip with an 8-7 extra-inning victory over Shawnee Community College.
Shawnee led 1-0 early and then used a five-run third inning to take control, but the Pioneers responded. Zwetzig tripled in the third and later scored, while Delta erupted for five runs in the fifth inning to swing momentum.
Reese Dominowski delivered a two-run single in the fifth, and Kopasz followed with a three-run double to give Delta a 7-7 tie after Shawnee had built the lead.
The game remained even until the eighth, when Zwetzig brought home Kopasz with a sacrifice to score the winning run.
Zwetzig finished with a triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Kopasz drove in three runs. Tiitola added two hits, and Baranek and Hycki also contributed offensively.
Dominowski threw five innings, and Gauthier was dominant in relief, tossing three scoreless innings to seal the victory.
Game 7 – College of DuPage 4, Delta College 3
Delta came up just short against College of DuPage, falling 4-3 in a competitive matchup.
The Pioneers scored all three of their runs in the second inning. Matzke crossed the plate on an error, Dominowski added an RBI single, and another run scored on a DuPage miscue.
College of DuPage answered with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Matzke had a hit and scored, while Baranek and Dominowski also recorded hits. Delta drew six walks and put pressure on DuPage throughout, but could not push across the tying run late.
Dominowski started in the circle, and Gauthier worked the final 2.2 innings with five strikeouts.
Game 8 – Danville Area Community College 9, Delta College 3
In the second meeting with Danville, the Pioneers fell 9-3.
Danville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Delta answered with two runs of its own as Matzke stole home and Hycki later scored on a passed ball. The Pioneers added another run in the third when Matzke scored on an error.
Danville, however, continued to apply pressure and pulled away over the middle innings.
Matzke scored twice and added a hit, while Kotenko, Belanger, and Baranek each recorded hits. Dominowski and Gauthier split the work in the circle.
Game 9 – Delta College 3, College of DuPage 0
Delta closed out March 6 with one of its strongest performances of the trip, defeating College of DuPage 3-0 behind a no-hitter from Gauthier.
The Pioneers scored in the first inning when Hycki came home on a passed ball. Delta added another in the fourth on an RBI double from Lathrom that scored Kopasz, then tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Kotenko singled home Kopasz.
Kopasz led the offense by going 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, while Kotenko had two hits and an RBI. Lathrom also doubled and drove in a run.
In the circle, Gauthier was outstanding, throwing a complete-game no-hitter with six strikeouts to lead the Pioneers to the shutout win.
Game 10 – Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute 4, Delta College 3
Delta wrapped up the trip with a narrow 4-3 loss to Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute.
The teams traded runs early, and the Pioneers took the lead with a two-run second inning. Delta stayed within one run throughout the final innings but could not find the equalizer.
Caldwell totaled seven hits and capitalized on timely extra-base hits, while Delta stayed competitive in another close contest to end the spring break slate.
