Women’s Basketball Gets a Commanding Victory to Open Their Season
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — The Delta College Women's Basketball team opened the 2025–26 season dominantly, rolling to a 98–70 victory over Wayne County Community College on Wednesday night at Pioneer Gym. The Pioneers (1-0, 0-0 MCCAA) controlled the pace from the opening tip and showcased their depth with everyone on the team scoring in the win.
Delta exploded for 36 first-quarter points, setting the tone early and never allowing the Wildcats (0-1, 0-0 MCCAA) to recover. The Pioneers pushed the ball in transition, attacked the paint, and used a strong rebounding effort to create second-chance opportunities, finishing with 38 total rebounds and 15 on the offensive glass.
The balanced scoring attack highlighted Delta's offensive firepower. Aya Mosley led all scorers with 14 points, knocking down efficient mid-range looks and finishing around the rim. Ellaiana Miller added 11 points off the bench, while Bella Smith posted a strong 12-point performance in her 15 minutes of action.
In the starting lineup, Malaya Brown fueled the Pioneers with 12 points, including two makes from beyond the arc. Makayla Watkins added 8 points, and Damaya Hartwick contributed 7 points and a steady defensive presence. Olivia Nickson also reached double figures, dropping 10 points to help extend the lead in the second half.
Delta's team-oriented play carried throughout the night, finishing with 17 assists, 11 steals, and forcing 25 turnovers. The Pioneers also shot an impressive 66.7% from the free-throw line, capitalizing on their aggressive drives to the basket.
The win gives Delta a strong start to the season as the Pioneers look to build momentum heading deeper into the fall. They head to Indiana to play in the Marian University Ancilla Charger Classic and will face off against Macomb Community College on Friday at 6:30 and Marian University Ancilla on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
