Delta faces off Bay College in a five set matchup
Delta faced off against Bay College on Monday night in a hard-fought matchup that came down to the wire. The Pioneers dropped the opening set (18–25) but showed plenty of energy at the net. Makenzie Nearman led the charge offensively with 16 kills, while Alexis Champagne added 13 kills and 10 digs to pace the attack.
The second set was a nail-biter, as both teams traded points back and forth. Despite strong defensive play highlighted by libero Sienna Ouendag's team-high 13 digs Delta fell just short, (26–28).
The Pioneers roared back in the third set, fueled by their grit on defense and a balanced offensive push. Nearman and Melanie Muringer, who tallied eight kills and three solo blocks, kept the momentum rolling as Delta claimed the set (28–26).
Carrying that energy into the fourth, the Pioneers showcased their offensive rhythm and tough blocking at the net. Charlotte Fournier contributed seven kills, while setter Cassie Jenema dished out a team-leading 27 assists to guide Delta to a (25–20) win and force a decisive fifth set.
With the match tied at two apiece, the fifth set was another back-and-forth battle. Despite Delta's resilience, Bay College found the late push they needed to close out the match, (15–9).
In the end, it was a competitive contest where every Pioneer contributed. Nearman led all scorers with 17.5 points, while Champagne and Muringer combined for over 27 points on the night. Delta finished with 52 kills and 99 digs as a team.
The Pioneers will look to regroup quickly as they return to action Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. when they host Grand Rapids Community College.
